• Why substance use treatment is underprovided

As my recent post documented, SUD treatment is both effective for patients and has large, positive spillovers to society. So why is it underfunded and underprovided? In my latest AcademyHealth post, I offer some answers.

    • Great post. I really enjoy reading everything you guys write on this blog. I always learn a lot here.

I think that another one of the main reasons treatment for substance abuses disorders isn’t well covered is its status as a service that is both “predictable” and “predictive”. As Ellis and McGuire 2007 points out, those it’s in the interest of the profit maximizing insurer to skimp on the coverage of types of services.
