I call it the difference between a thing and its derivative (or first difference) or the other thing and its integral (or cumulative sum).
Putting it together, we have that Democrats want to differentiate and Republicans seek to integrate. What’s the mathematical operation that splits the difference? It’s been a while but perhaps that’s what fractional calculus is for. Or is it factional calculus that’s needed here?
