Better spreadsheets

In response to my post on spreadsheets, Michael Ash of the University of Massachusetts Amherst emailed me about some tools and tips that I thought I’d pass along.

Emery Berger at UMass Amherst Computer Science and his students have several tools that produce visual representations of the chain of formulas and references.  Emery has done very interesting research to explain how a spreadsheet is like a programming language and both to make the similarities manifest and to harness the similarities for better, safer spreadsheet work

Jocelyn Ireson-Paine is an expert in the field of “spreadsheet risk” (see https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/make-spreadsheets-safe–2).
