Transparency in Las Vegas, HAI edition

When it comes to hospital-associated infections (HAIs), what happens in Vegas no longer stays in Vegas. A bill sitting on the Nevada governor’s desk would require disclosure of HAIs to patients about their infections. On the heels of expanded federal efforts, there is a lot of action in this sector of patient safety.

One notable innovation in the Nevada bill: notifying the patient directly, not just aggregate reporting. While HAI lawsuits have been rare, expect that to change.

While CMS is increasingly refusing to pay for the incremental cost of HAIs, it hasn’t yet mandated disclosure to the patient. That would be a game changer.
