The difference between needing and wanting

In my post at the Upshot, I said the following about milk:

But at a certain point, we have to acknowledge that we are the only mammals on the planet that continue to consume milk after childhood, often in great amounts.

To which, I have received the usual number of tweets and emails snarkily telling me that humans are also the only animals that cook their food, drink beer, and even “tweet”.

Of course. The difference is that we NEED to do none of those things. We like to do all of them. We have not been designed to NEED milk after childhood, just as no other mammal has been designed to NEED milk either. You should absolutely feel free to do the things you like to do, including cook your food, drink beer, and tweet. Just don’t try to sell it as necessary to health.
