Last month, I attended the 2026 Alzheimer’s Association Advocacy Forum in Washington, D.C. to engage with my representatives in Congress about policy priorities to support Americans impacted by Alzheimer’s and all other dementia. On the last day of the conference, we were addressed by National Institutes of Health Director Jay Bhattacharya, the capstone session of a successful few days on Capitol Hill.
Unfortunately, Bhattacharya’s comments made to the 1,000 Alzheimer’s and dementia advocates in the hotel’s ballroom missed the mark. While the research director spoke eloquently about pursing bold and risky science in pursuit of a cure to Alzheimer’s, his words were irreconcilable with the steps his agency and the Trump administration have taken to shrink and threaten research conducted to accomplish this very goal.
