“Google Reader will be retired on July 1, 2013.”
I am so not happy. Tell me all the other products I should try in the comments. I want products that sync across iPad, Droid, and PC. I want one that my work IT department will let me install (which is almost nothing).
PS: Google, I hate you.

I just downloaded NetNewsWire. It allows you to sync with all the subscriptions you have in Google Reader.

I have not yet found an alternative. I strongly suspect that Google is “retiring” this because it is:
1) Useful
2) Usable on any browser (not just Chrome).
So much for “Do not evil”.
Puikes.

netvibes.com is the closest replacement I’ve found so far. It’s web based, so it should work across devices.
P.S. I share your sentiment completely.

I use netvibes.com as my iGoogle replacement. It could very well do Google Reader as well.

Wow. Just saw this message as I logged into my reader account. What total crap. Why don’t they make suggestions for us to migrate into?

I’m ready to start a White House petition to get Obama to intervene. This is that devastating. You’d think with a product this popular, albeit mostly with geeks, they’d find a way to profit.

Geeks who blog and Tweet, big time.

After an evening-long profane tirade over the demise of Google Reader, I decided to go with Feedly. Can be used from the web (i.e., no need to install at the university) and syncs with iOS and Android. The Google Chrome plug-in is pretty nice. Best of all, you can link Feedly to your Google Reader (while it still exists). It will automatically sync with your current subscriptions and save you the trouble of re-subscribing.
I definitely do not like Feedly as well as Google Reader. It does not mark items as read after you scroll past them. It took a few minutes to get all the options customized to my liking. And their servers just crashed (presumably because of the mass panic following the retirement announcement for Google Reader. But it is convenient enough.

I’ve been wasting too many hours on this as well, and also ended up on Feedly, begrudgingly. One click and everything migrated from Google Reader migrated to Feedly, so that was a big draw. And I think I’ve figured out the closest thing to that option:
If you go to Preferences (left hand toolbar) and scroll down to
>>Auto-Select On Scroll
Should feedly automatically select and mark-as-read entries as you scroll the latest page or other views organized by time? yes, no or inlined-only. Use inlined-only if you want this behavior only on ‘entire content inlined’ views. The default setting is inlined-only.
>> Select Yes
>> When reading, switch to List view
>> Scroll down as normal, should mark-as-read as you go – for me it gets stuck when I can’t scroll past the final dozen items. But then you can toggle through each post by hitting “j” which also marks-as-read as you go along.
Hope that helps.

How disappointing! Thanks for sharing, at any rate.

Can’t comment since I’ve not explored any of them yet.

I got to this post using Feedly (my first post-Google Reader experience, by the way). On iOS I use Newsify and I am crossing my fingers they will switch to the Feedly API before the July 1st. If not, the Feedly app has good reviews anyway.

I am as disappointed as you, Austin. I have made a feeble attempt at installing the Feedly app … they say it does many of the same things.
Regardless, a very sad day.

Feedly. Period. It works.
by Mike K on March 14th, 2013 at 12:55
I second, Feedly.
